Q. I am anemic and am looking for an iron supplement that will not constipate me. What would you suggest? – Melissa

OUR RESPONSE: I am a big fan of a product called Energizing Iron.  It utilizes a few different direction to boost the quality of the blood products the body makes.  It uses and Heme form of iron that is easy on the body and it is also the age old concept of improve the blood by ingesting liver.  Now the last thing I want someone doing in the US is eating animal liver, since our animals are not the healthiest, so we use bovine liver fractions from safer countries.  This combination is so comfortable for the digestive system that you will not see upset stomach or constipation.  Dosing of this product can be anything from 2 daily to 6 daily depending on how low the blood work is.  It is also important in anemia that you have all the basic blood building pieces that are important, B vitamins, Vitamin C, minerals, Essential Fats.  In addition you need to have a solid digestive system, so if you have any GI health concerns we need to look at this. On a personal note I lost a massive amount of blood after a surgery due to severe internal bleeding a number of years ago.  I credit Energizing Iron with getting me to a healthy CBC within 2 weeks.  I stayed on it for some time after and I never needed any expensive treatment so you could say I LOVE this product!

Thanks for a great question.

Q. I have heard that Lipitor damages your renal system. Is there a natural equivalent to Lipitor that will help lower her cholesteral levels safely? – Alison

OUR RESPONSE: Thanks for a great question.  I love to talk about Cholesterol!  This misunderstood sterol can catch a lot of grief.  Cholesterol is necessary to repair tissue.  If we take too much away, guess what can happen, damaged tissue and for your mom damaged joints.  Now as we all know the body is about balance, so too much cholesterol not good and too little cholesterol not good.  To naturally bring down your mothers cholesterol I would approach it with 3 things in mind.  1st she need to be taking a high potency Omega 3 (Fish Oil) with an EPA:DHA ratio of greater than 1200mg:900mg.  2nd she needs to take the Ascorbate form of Vitamin C (not Ascorbic Acid) about 2000mg twice daily.  Ascorbate is not only a tissue repairer, but it is necessary in the end chemical pathways in the liver to rid the body of excess cholesterol.  3rd Red Yeast Rice about 1200mg in the evening.  Red Yeast Rice is natures low dose statin.  Monitor her levels in 3 month intervals to see where things are.  This should include a complete lipid panel and a vitamin D check.  Keep in mind that studies show that when total cholesterols start to drop too low the immune system plummets.  Keep things balanced and healthy!

Q. What are the best supplements for people who exercise a lot? – Eric

OUR RESPONSE: Where do I begin with this one? Fitness and supplements go hand in hand. The importance of the right nutrition in anyone who exercises, a professional athlete or the occasional cross trainer, is essential.  A few basic factors that I recommend across the board is to make sure that a healthy meal, or if a meal cannot happen then a protein drink or bar may be used until food is available, within an hour after you finish exercise.  Also essential is Vitamin C (Ascorbate) which is essential for repair of tissue.  So 1000mg of the Ascorbate form of Vitamin C within an hour after exercise will start the healing process.  Staying active can sharpen your mind and keep you feeling young, so remember to feed and nourish your active body.
